  2. When it comes to open mics you get what you pay for.
Hector runs a fun, supportive, mic. He gives out cool comedy prizes & spots on pro shows. If you ask him for advice on your set he is always happy to help.
If you're 21 & over you could also win the drink of the week.
A great place for new comedians.

  3. Yeah, the free mic is over. It's too bad, because it was one of the best mics in the city. *Sigh*

  4. Great vibe. Cozy room. Funny host. Decently priced drinks. Good times.

  5. just because its free...does not make it a great mic....

and in order to make acomment like "BEST MIC IN THE CITY"...you would have had to have gone to every single open mic in NY...

  6. If that last Friday Mic at O'Hanlon's was so great why'd they cancel it and put on a different show? Typically, when people enjoy something they want to keep doing it. Must have been a truly amazing mic to be shit-canned like that. :)

  7. Hector is a great guy who runs a well organized mike - He brings energy and is a fun supportive host. He also gives out receipts which no other mike does (do I hear open mikes are tax deductible?? Yes they are!) Just a good mike with good people - if you dont like it dont go - simple

I've known Hector Luis for 3 years. He's only been fair and good and encouraging to me.
I went to O'Hanlon's open mic on a Friday nite before Hector took over. After each act did there time they hung out at the bar with their friends. Maybe 6 or so left for my time. On the ride home that was the worst I ever felt at a mic.
And my name is Phil O'Reilly.

  12. Great mic! It felt like friends hanging out. Hector is a good host & is very personable he's always happy to help with advice or a tag.

  13. Hector is a nice guy. It would be better if this mic were free, and it's rather surprising that it's not. There can be a lot of noise from the rest of the bar that's distracting as a comedian.

  14. You hear noise if you're not getting laughs. I had a blast! there's a lotta fun at this mic. I won a cool prize and the drinks are cheap! If you're funny the other comics laugh! I LOVE THIS MIC!

  15. Hector and his wife are great people. It's a supportive room, even when you mess up.;) If you've never been at his mic, check it out. You won't be disappointed. Worth the $5. no doubt.

  16. btw, the free mic ended because people were sneaking drinks into the bar. so they lost the mic to hector. the bar doesn't care who runs the mic as long as some people buy drinks. when people are bringing in booze from outside, well they fucked the free mic.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Uh, They didn't lose the mic to me. I inquired about nights available to do a mic and Fridays were free. What happened before has nothing to do with me.

However, I will take this opportunity to welcome everyone who reads this to come down & have some fun every Saturday night at 10PM. It's free for all comedians with no drink minimums! We also raffle off a couple of "fishbowl spots" every show so be ready to perform! See you Saturdays at 10PM at O'Hanlon's Bar! For reservations or more info. go to www.HECTORLUIS.com

  18. I love Hector's mics because he WILL get you up--from my experience. I am from Chicago and cannot BELIEVE the administration that goes into managing an open mic comedy career in this town. The emails, the clicking, the waiting for the "cast list." Good lord. Hector does it quick and dirty. You pay your five bucks but you get time and the crowd is supportive and not cliquey. I think I did show up once and the mic was done or did not happen but that's what I get for going around town chasing mics and showing up late.

  19. I've been to mics in NYC, LA, SF, and even Canada and I can say without a doubt this is in my opinion the best run and most supportive mic out there. Of course I haven't been to them all but when you have found the best you needn't search them all. Most comics pay attention to the mic holder at the time. There are some exceptions who can't help but be focused on themselves while they wait because they either a. lack confidence b. didn't prepare themselves properly or c. they are just socially awkward and don't know how to live when the focus is not on them. I am one of those comics falls in the b. category from time to time but I am a decent enough person to throw caution to the wind and give common courtesy to those performing. If you see me texting just know that I have sick grandmother that I must look after and shes probably sending me "days of our lives" highlights. Many comics stay to the end as well and network, don't worry about people leaving though. Often there are good reasons people leave early, from negative vibes to quests to redeem themselves for shitty sets. Over all if your aim is to have fun and get better in the process I would do this mic as much as possible. Hope the review helped holla at me if you have any questions at www.jamarrjohnjohnson.com

  20. the roomer is that Hector snaked the last host out of the mic. a mud slinging campaign if you will. they were in the way and Hector got em out of the way. Similar to Goldman and sachs. I thought, "wow! this Hector Luis has got balls!" If nothing else, Hector's big ass has got some tenticles, he knows people.. the guy's from new york comedy club for christ sakes. people pay and say his mic is better than a free mic? okay! there will be some ball jugglers. keep this in mind, when you pay for a mic your not paying 5 or 10 bucks, your potentially paying thousand's of dollars. your paying the host to circulate your unpublished hard work that someone else will take and make their own. do not buy into the bullshit, the bar has to pay bills, it was free before right? I've been entertaining for over 3-years and am sharing stages with some un-believable talent. I talked with Dave attel after i opened for him. He told me if you listen to nobody's you'll get nowhere, but listen to somebody, you go far. look for free mics, those are the stairways to produced shows. There's no lie no hustle!

  21. You talked to Dave Attel and you opened for him? You forgot to mention that you blew him too while you were giving Nick Dipaolo a handjob

  22. Uh, As I stated before right here August 9th I didn't take the mic from anyone. They lost it for whatever reason.
I inquired about nights available to do a mic and Fridays were free. What happened before has nothing to do with me. Your "roomer" is a lie. In fact the only mudslinging I see is yours "Anonymous".

However, I will take this opportunity to welcome everyone who reads this to come down & have some fun every Saturday night at 10PM. It's free for all comedians with no drink minimums! 23. eff this mic, Hector's been in the game for years and he's still sorry! you know the saying though, those who don't play the sport well host it! hector's playing his position, he's harmless leave him alone, he knows the truth.

  24. Had a great time last night at this mic! Worth coming back to.

  25. So fucking what if it costs? Comedy is a business and you are your own product! You can't invest $5 in yourself? You're not worth 2k a year (assuming you go to more than one a week)? Sucks to be you! Open mics are to practice your craft, IT IS A BUSINESS EXPENSE! Some mics charge cover AND drink minimum. As far as my review: I can't say enough about how great this mic is! Very, VERY supportive room, no one EVER feels out of place or unwelcome. One of the best of the best in NYC (and yes, I traversed many MANNNY of them looking for a home base)! Hector and his wife are two of the nicest, most fun people to work with!!! LOVE you guys!

  27. Hector punched me right in my ovaries! It was the wake up call I needed... mostly because I don't have ovaries... so now... I take Plavix... and this is a great mic. Truly. I would highly recommend it... or even recommend it when I'm high... (I like boobies)

  28. Nice Mike
Hector, the big guy, is supportive and knows what works and he'll tell you.
    What more do you want?

  29. Really cool place to work out, nice ambiance for an open mic, great place to work material because the audience mostly consist of comics so if your bits are rockin' you know it works and occasionally actually audience members add incentive to "kill". Hector is a cool dude and pronounced my name right, Kudos ! Only grievance it gets loud in FOH at the bar, but hey we're mic'd so no biggie.
